2009 -Utopia

Utopia was our theme for 2009, which explored how the idea of paradise has inspired artists and thinkers throughout time. Students took part in a short art history course followed by a discussion of the ideas of what an ideal community could be. Each class explored ideas of Nirvana, Paradise, and Utopia in different ways for each subject. By popular demand, ArtMill students re-created our magic raft, perhaps to sail off to a new world on the other side of the lake...

Our Utopian Tree House was first imagined and drawn by students after looking at the old caravan we'd been saving down by the workshop (Thanks Techonice Divadlo for the donation, and Kristof Kintera for the initial design). Designer Jackie Gross from New York City led the class in Caravan Utopian Interior Design, with her husband, painter Jon McCafferty helped the kids create mock-ups of the outside. Jon later had a class in the Ship (as in Pirate) Building, and Forest-Elf-Architecture.

In 2009, ArtMill hosted two artists-in-residence - Robin Price and Keiji Shinohara - who each brought a unique talent and insight to inspire the summer camp students.
