2011 - Green

Green Theme

July 31 - August 10, 2011

"Green" was the theme of ArtMill Summer Camp 2011.  In 10 days, we combined art and science in many ways including looking at the eco-system of the lake under the microscope to designing and building a mud spa bath with a little art in between.

Artists in Residence Alex Nichols and Martin Zet each enriched the ‘green' theme in a unique way.  San Francisco-based Nichols created ‘concrete poetry' with the children in two languages for the exhibit Tick Tock at Galerie Califia.  The opening of the exhibit included Steel Cups Carry, a LIVE performance by New York artist Larry Litt, that challenged the plastic waste of traditional art openings.  Prague-based Zet constructed a portable viewing platform to observe the water just under the surface of the lake and ‘painted' with live organisms found there.  Special guest Michael Stanley-Jones, Press Attaché of UNEP and Liaison of the United Nations Safe Planet Campaign, introduced campers to the reality of  plastic pollution with an engaging discussion.  We topped it off with water balloon fights, roasted marshmallows and daily bike rides.
