WHAT \ U.N. Safe Planet Campaign \ Art Contests
Art Dialogue is running various art contests with the Safe Planet Campaign as a starting point for Arts and Outreach activities globally. These competitions can be utilized as an educational and creative model to explore issues on hazardous chemicals and wastes in local environments and are easily adapted to various countries and cultures around the world. Partnering with various school districts, local contacts, NGOs, plus grass-roots help on the ground, outreach numbers to youth can exceed 20,000 plus per contest. Community volunteers are also encouraged, thus bringing the issues across generations and social groups in each country.
Teachers are also asked to incorporate the particular environmental problem into their curriculum, as a supplement to the art contest. We are now developing an educational kit with our friends at 5Gyres Institute in California on plastic pollution, and Creative Change that can be added to the school + art lessons.
Contest themes are geared to the local environment and issues of the region: new non-plastic bags; POPs; organic recipes w/non-toxic and local foods; green jobs; poster design for rethinking consumption (the "4 R's": Reduce, Recycle, Reuse, Refuse); Body Burden; etc.
