broccoli

the wonder vege

Broccoli's got a bad rap. "eat your broccoli" echoes in kid's ears until adulthood, recalling mushy tasteless green stuff on the plate that was better left in the fridge. But have you had the kind that grows fresh in the garden and doesn't come wrapped in plastic? An entirely different species of green, this. Our first bumper crop of broccoli is coming in this week, after many years of getting a few scraggly bunches. We're talking cups full of freshly steamed broccoli on the plate, sprinkled with cheese, garden herbs, and a bit of garlic. Even kids love it. And they should, since it really will help them grow. Broccoli is off the charts in vitamins A, C, and K. The A & K combo being especially useful in helping the body to collect the calcium and phosphorus from our food- the stuff that builds strong bones. It's also a great de-tox, getting rid of unwanted and unknown chemicals that seep into us every walking day on our planet. Try to find some this week at your local farmer's market. Or better yet, get your own garden growing for next year!
