end of summer

ArtMill's energy is slowly dropping with the ripe tomatoes on the garden ground. The summer season winds down, and we get the fires on for fall.

It seems each year we say "this was the best summer camp ever", so cliche, but sorry, this one WAS. The group of teachers and counselors who graced us this year was unbelievable. It was a nearly one-on-one ratio of teachers to kids. Everyone worked hard to make it happen, and I am so grateful to all those who made the effort. Hope everyone recooped by now, after the intense 10 days, and that like us, you are still smiling at the fun and adventure. As director, not all the news reaches me of what happened (understandable censorship), but the stories I did see and hear were wonderful. In particular I think Markus' Mud Spa will go down in ArtMill history as one of the more exceptionally creative works ever.

Catherine and Ron's Design Class was university level. Looking under the microscope with a world-class scientist like Dr. Aline was phenomenal. Having a surprise visit from the U.N's Michael Stanley-Jones was inspiring (letter to Johhny Depp to follow!). Bea and Danny taught us not only Spanish, but some mean art. Y tambien Adriana, ¡gracias! Maggie's Italian was ever so popular, and the animation classes, well, awesome, (if not downright violent). The dance classes were hands down the best ever, thanks Holly. And who did not love the cooking? Is there anyone who did not gain weight this ArtMill? Daniel, Maruška, děkuju. Clyde, you know we love ya. And Miriam, this year's play should travel to Hollywood. Take Alex with you. No, wait, don't, we need her here! You were all an incredible team, and made a difference in young lives for a long time to come. Marianka you continue to amaze me with your energy, even after all these years.

Sending you all some fresh creme of tomato soup (with goat's milk of course), and a warm hug from the mill. Your laughter still rings around the barn, mixing with some autumnal mist. To the young people who came to ArtMill: YOU are our inspiration. Keep the planet safe. See you next year.

 love,

Barbara
