eternal return

The swallows have returned from their winter sojourn in Italy, blessing the mill with their staccato esperanto, as well as the ubiquitous swallow poop on my parked car.

I did a piece a few years ago on the swallows, for a show in Italy, that referred them back to Central Europe and their incessant traveling skills. There was a story about how the St. Gotthard tunnel , 57 kilometers long, that goes through the Alps in Switzerland, is closed to cars each year when the swallows go back and forth to Italy. What tracking genes! These little creatures of flight return to the mill each year, for generations, and build their nests and eat our flies and then leave just as suddenly as they came; signaling another season's end. But for now, it means the warmth is returning and spring is indeed upon us. News! Baby Bunnies, in time for easter. Watch the nest move on this video from the morning feed. They are too young to touch yet, but in a couple of weeks they'll be jumping around. Just as new life is a part of the farm this time of year, so is death. Remember that new rooster I told you about? Well, see the photo of what's left of him today. By the looks of the scattered feathers, it looks like a fox or a weasel was involved. Which could still maintain my theory that more than one rooster in the coop is not a bad idea, if all the hens are happy. And the wily foxes are kept at bay. Speaking of death, have you ever heard of the expression "Swan's Song"? Referring to one's last hurrah, an ending, a grand finale to a great performance...based on the myth from ancient times that a swan was mute during it's lifetime, only to sing a beautiful song just as it was dying. A family of six swans took up residency across the lake this year, and as I sat at the boathouse this week gazing out, I heard them all singing together. Debunking that myth. "Let music sound while he doth make his choice; Then, if he lose, he makes a swan-like end, Fading in music." Shakespeare (Merchant of Venice) So, let the drama begin and the return of another season at ArtMill.
