new beginnings

April 5, 2011

It's spring, obviously, because even the Czechs are smiling. Or, to be specific, they are now complaining about the heat, instead of the bitter cold of three weeks ago. The heady scent of sweet hyacinth fills the air, the birds are singing like there is no tomorrow and Tonda's incesstant whistling has stepped up a beat. There is light now, when we get the kids up for school, and longer evenings to walk the dogs over the fields full of wild hares and good smelling things. We'll have enough eggs leftover to dye for Easter this year. The abundance of which may be due to the fact that I came home to find we now have two roosters instead of one. Against nature, they do not fight one another, but, as Gabi says, encourage one another to crow louder. Nature is always our teacher, even on the issues of gender. And now we definitely don't need alarm clocks at the mill.

With Spring there is always hope for something new, to throw out the old and start things on the right foot. It's traditionally a time of fasting and cleansing, what the Czechs call "masopust" (meat fast). After my recent trip to Hawai'i for the Safe Planet events at the 5th International Marine Debris Conference, I learned a lot about the plastic pollution we are putting into our oceans, killing our fish and working it's way up the food chain. So I am joining some of my more ardent colleagues and giving up fish and meat, that is not home grown or raised locally. Not a big difference for us, as we pretty much do that anyway, but more difficult when one is in the world traveling. Each little step is a symbol, a ripple that can magnify and create a wave of change.

This is the first ArtMill blog, a new beginning for this place, that is also growing into the world. May all your roosters crow together in harmony.
