meet our 2018 Artists in Residence!

ArtMill is delighted to have several Artist Residents this summer, including film maker Tony Villani (US/Italy) and Enrique Martinez Leal (Spain/USA). 

Tony Villani  is an award winning filmmaker with his projects SUSAN & THOMAS, A Ticket to Hollywood: Europeans in Screenland, 1925-56 and A Ticket to Hollywood: Europeans in Los Angeles, 1925-56 - Prologue, and Roman Kosher. He has been an independent and freelance writer/producer/director for a number of film and TV production companies in both Los Angeles and Rome. His films have been selected and honored by numerous festivals in the U.S. and Canada. His project on Roman Jewish cuisine, Roman Kosher earned an official selection from the LA Jewish Film Festival while still in progress. His most recent completed efforts include Susan & Thomas, from a Susan Sontag essay, and Shindler's War, starring World War Two veteran Harry Shindler. Older work includes films on Marilyn Monroe, Frank Capra, and Rita Hayworth distributed by the A&E Network, Biography series.


Mr. Villani's most current project in progress, SOLDIERS showcases six stories of different conflicts and personal wars. Two more films, The Big Hrowboski, about LA visual artist David Hrobowski and A Ticket to Hollywood: Europeans in Los Angeles, 1925-56, Part Two are currently in post production.


Mr Villani has written and directed a multilingual play, Welcome to Hollywood in Rome. He has been an actor in a number of motion pictures including Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York.
 

Prof. Villani is the Rome coordinator of the Sephardi Voices oral history project on which he has been working with AUR interns. He has published and presented papers in both the U.S. and Europe. As an International film and media expert, he has been quoted in the Los Angeles Times, ABC News, The International Herald Tribune, The Guardian, the BBC, The Times of London. He is the recipient of the 2017 Carlo Rambaldi Effetto Cinema award.
 
Prof. Villani has been in several one-man and group photo exhibitions in Los Angeles where he returns periodically. He has taught at the American University of Rome since 1998.
