Our Ocean, Our Lungs

Did you know that the oceans act as the earth's lungs? The sea is the main regulator of carbon dioxide for the planet. So it makes sense that if they are not healthy, the human species will also suffer. To this end, we are proposing an educational ArtPark on the SS Palo Alto.

Here are some of the designs coming in from artists, architects, scientists around the world. To be published this spring in a 'catalog of ideas' with the University of California's Center for Arts as Social Practice in Santa Cruz. jon Lee is our wonderful designer. We'll be posting some of these great ideas as we near our next Roundtable at UCSC in May. Send us your input and pass it along to your friends and colleagues. For the Oceans......

Send us your input and pass it along to your friends and colleagues.   This first project is by Jason deCaires Taylor (UK/Mexico),  http://www.underwatersculpture.com/ who is proposing an underwater sculpture garden. His park in Cancun, Mexico attracts scubadiving tourists, diverting them from the natural local reefs and thus reducing the impact of damage by humans. With Safe Planet we had the opportunity to dive with Jason during the UN Climate Change Conference in 2010, where he showed us how his sculptures are "planted" with young corals and create new reefs. It is truly astounding to experience this beauty underwater. And while northern California Pacific Ocean is much colder than the Caribbean, the idea will entice swimmers and divers into the water to learn and see first hand the abundant sea life surrounding the ship. We are also thinking of the possibilities of glass bottom boat excursions for the less amphibean visitors.
