WHERE \ the Mill

the Mill

Červený Mlýn, the Red Mill, as it is colloquially called, probably dates back to the 16th century. As our family slowly reconstructs her back to her glory years of the early 20th Century, we are piecing together her history and structure. Situated more than a kilometer from the nearest village, we enjoy an uncanny sense of quietude and removal from civilization. The surrounding forests block any sounds of traffic, and the lake the mill sits on reflects the skies in the summer, and makes for great ice skating in the winter.

The equivalent of six family houses in size, there are several buildings and fields making up the mill grounds. Besides the family's living house, converted from the stables in the 1950's, there is a guest cottage, the four floors of the immense mill itself, a granary, workshops with new living areas starting this spring, the barn, studio, and a couple of stables for hay and horses.

The Mill is not just a Center for Sustainable Creativity, but a working family farm. Winter or summer, the animals must be fed, the roofs fixed, and the kids to school. We all get dirty, mix cement, shovel manure, and paint not just pictures, but window frames. Because for us, art is our life and our life is our art.

Although we are isolated from civilization, the mill is a hub of activity with our team and neighbors coming and going to work, eat, make things, and often relax together around the fireside at night. Just as it has been for generations.
